As Deputy Headmaster of St Christopher's Primary School it is my role to ensure all of our children are receiving the best education possible. Furthermore, my role as Deputy Headmaster is to make sure the children are happy, safe and motivated to learn. At St Christopher’s we believe in a broad and wide ranging curriculum. Children are taught French, Spanish, Chinese and Latin by specialist language teachers. We also offer the children access to a wide range of Musical instruments, again taught by specialist musicians.
In my relatively short time at St Christopher’s School I have implemented many positive changes. These include improving our ICT provision and re-structuring the PE- to allow a wider exposure for all year groups to a variety of sports. With the help of my excellent team at St Christopher’s we have also introduced a new daily Guided Reading scheme, which we believe will greatly improve the children’s comprehension skills- but equally as important will engender a love of reading for the rest of their lives.
At St Christopher’s School we strive to be the best and I am very proud of the children’s hard work and achievements, an example of which can be seen in our excellent Year 6 results obtained in this year’s Kent Tests (our previous Kent Tests results aren’t too bad either!)
I have been at St Christopher’s School for over 7 years in my current role as Office Manager and Health & Safety Coordinator. Safeguarding, understandably so, remains at core of what I do. As Health and Safety Coordinator I am responsible for the implementation of all that comes under that umbrella and it forms the foundation of Safeguarding. Creating a safe environment at school is fundamental in enabling children to have the best outcomes. Through thorough Risk Assessment, Checks and Hazard Reporting guided by external aid in Peninsula Business Services (our Health and Safety advisors) and APT Howfield (our fire and alarm systems supplier) we have created a robust and comprehensive approach to Health and Safety.
In my office role, amongst other things, I produce and continually update an extensive website resource including Parent and Pupil portals and huge amounts of information to effectively improve communication in every regard. In addition I ensure the policies I compile are up to date and effectively implemented when my role converges with Mr Paynes. I am confident in our ability to maintain the schools position as providing an excellent education in a safe and secure environment.
My role on the SLT is to ensure all standards and requirements are met relating to staffing issues. I am responsible for the recruitment, employment, vetting and mandatory checking of all staff/advisers/volunteers and all others who work in regular contact with children at St Christopher’s School. This involves the regular updating and implementation of the Single Central Record in accordance with the Department of Education – Keeping Children Safe in Education, thus fulfilling our commitment to safeguard and promote the welfare of children at St Christopher’s School. I am the Staff Co-ordinator responsible for all staff related matters. In raising high standards with staff within the School I implement on-going reviews of staff appraisals, lesson observations and performance management. I also work as PA/Master and with the Office Manager ensure the smooth running of the office and school. In addition I operate in the role as the Clerk to the School Advisory Body primarily responsible for implementing the decisions of the Advisory Body.
I have worked at St Christopher’s School for 9 years primarily as a Teacher and have previous experience working for the Ministry of Defence in Whitehall, London at Ministerial level. I attended the Safer Recruitment and Employment Training Course on 5 Nov 14.
I am delighted to be St Christopher's Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL). I began my training for the role in the summer and more recently completed the Designated Safeguarding Leaders course provided by the Kent Safeguarding Children Board.
In this role, amongst other elements, I update the relevant policies and ensure their effective implementation. Our staff are immensely professional and are regularly involved in full training sessions delivered by Kent Safeguarding Children Board (KSCB) I arrange as well as ongoing in- house training so all staff are current with St Christopher's School policies and procedures.
Furthermore, I will continue to give the children the tools in order to keep themselves safe. We benefit hugely from connections with national and local institutions including ChildLine, UK Safer Internet, Kent Police, Kent Safeguarding Board and the Anti-Bullying Alliance. In addition we take part in national schemes and workshops with theatre groups the aim of which is to give the children an outlet during which all they have learnt through curriculum based topics and display information can be focused on whole school community initiatives.
Ultimately for success in my role it must be stressed that parental involvement and understanding is essential. To this end I have provided numerous resources on this website under 'Parents' and 'Resources for Parents' so we can work to produce a collaborative atmosphere where safeguarding children is paramount. In addition, pupil friendly resources are available at the same website under 'Pupils'. I would, again, urge you to visit these elements and explore the resources with your children to gain a greater insight into E-Safety and Anti-Bullying themes.
I will, in short, ensure that the safety of the children is our overriding priority.
